Red Velvet Cupcake

A tender red velvet cupcake topped with a tall swirl of cream cheese frosting.

Red velvet cupcake

This cupcake bakes up moist with a subtle cocoa note. The frosting is tangy and creamy.

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red food color

Frosting

  • 6 oz cream cheese, room temp
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temp
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps

  1. Heat oven to 350F. Line a muffin pan.
  2. Whisk dry cupcake ingredients. Add sugar, oil, egg, buttermilk, vanilla, and red color.
  3. Fill liners 2/3 full. Bake 16 to 18 minutes.
  4. Beat frosting ingredients until smooth and pipe on cooled cupcakes.

Notes

  • Do not overbake; keep the centers soft.
  • Chill frosting 10 minutes if it is too soft to pipe.
